Astra at the St. Regis San Francisco
Nestled within the vibrant landscape of San Francisco’s SoMa neighbourhood, Astra, the signature fine dining restaurant at The St. Regis San Francisco, is a testament to the convergence of modern-day sophistication and local cultural richness.
Astra was conceived as an independent, art-focused destination that captures the spirit of the SoMa neighbourhood while embodying the timeless luxury synonymous with the St. Regis brand.
London-based design firm Blacksheep embarked on a multifaceted project with the vision to create a space that is colourful, lively, and whimsical. The objective was to anchor the design in the local landscape, utilising subtle abstractions, rich textures, and soft metallics to bring forth a unique Californian luxury experience.
To achieve this vision, Blacksheep turned to Amron for their advice on a creative metal solution.
The SPZ-52 wire mesh in a plated satin brass finish was the choice, and this architectural wire mesh was pivotal in adding an extra layer of sophistication to the bar space, bringing texture and golden hues to the backlit structure. SPZ-52, characterised by its unique, dense rectangular pattern with crushed warp wires, creates an intriguing visual experience up close, appearing as a transparent metallic pattern when viewed from a distance.
The woven mesh found its place within the bar shelving and back wall, where it seamlessly integrates with the overall design, paying homage to San Francisco’s iconic tram lines. The mesh, combined with the bar’s overhead trellis, forms a bold transformation that not only enhances the visual appeal but also serves as a nod to the city’s rich heritage. This thoughtful integration creates a distinctive statement of St. Regis glamor, attracting a broad cross-section of guests, from tourists and locals to art enthusiasts.
