Victoria Wharf

Victoria Wharf

Victoria Wharf is part of Westminster City Council’s initiative to build more affordable housing.

Designed by Child Graddon Lewis, this development transformed a derelict site in Ladbroke Grove into 22 homes.

The design took inspiration from the nearby canal and barge decoration, adding colour and patterns in the brickwork and balconies, complemented by our distinctive gold perforated screens.

Project Challenges

The houses were built on a disused brownfield site that had sat empty for over twenty years, which presented problems, including daylight limitations and an existing gas main crossing the site. Other issues included being situated across from the elevated part of Ladbroke Grove Bridge and the canal.

Location

Ladbroke Grove, London.

The Solution

The challenges influenced Victoria Wharf being designed as a landmark building that increased canal views whilst limiting noise and pollution from Ladbroke Grove.

The building enhances the canal front and local area with its brickwork pattern, colourful glazed bricks on the balconies and the opulent sliding perforated panels.

Quinn London asked us to fabricate and finish the perforated screens, doors, balustrades and stair core. The architect designed the block diamond patterns with smaller diamond-shaped perforations, using custom-made tools specifically created for this project, including a half-tool for refining the pattern edges. This ensured a bespoke aesthetic that stayed true to the project’s commitment to affordability.

The panels were finished with a stunning Bronze Vanda powder coat by Valspar in a nod to the brass plaques found on the canal barges.

The Final Result

This project is a great example of how design for affordable homes can create a meaningful, lasting impact for communities. The abandoned site has been developed to create an eye-catching building that offers cost-effective housing for residents and plays homage to the location.
