Leeds University

Fabrik Interior Designers were tasked by the University of Leeds Facilities Directorate to reimagine the interior design of their Devonshire Hall site, a bustling student residence accommodating 592 students.

The aim was to create a contemporary and inviting atmosphere that would resonate with a diverse student population, including international tenants. The project emphasised the need for practicality and durability in design elements due to the demanding nature of the environment.

The Design Process

The primary challenge was to design a scheme that not only modernised the space but also fostered a sense of warmth and homeliness. Additionally, the design had to withstand the rigors of daily student life, ensuring longevity and low maintenance.

The designers proposed a comprehensive interior design scheme that focused on practicality without compromising on aesthetics. One notable aspect of the solution was the implementation of the AP210 partition system and the AC400 ceiling system, both in sleek black finishes, to revamp the common room area which was installed by NRB.

The AC400 ceiling system, featuring expanded mesh tiles, was chosen for its durability and simple installation method.

Adding Amron’s Products

The rafts were suspended from the ceiling using threaded bars, with special connectors ensuring secure attachment. This streamlined the installation process and minimised disruption to the space while maximising efficiency.

Similarly, the AP210 partition system was installed from floor to ceiling, incorporating expanded mesh infills finished in black. This choice not only added a contemporary touch to the common room but also provided practical partitioning, allowing for versatile use of the space.

The implementation of the partition system and the ceiling system successfully helped transform the common room at Devonshire Hall into a vibrant and functional hub for students. The sleek black finishes added a modern aesthetic while the durable materials ensured longevity, catering to the demands of student life.

The revitalised common room now serves as a welcoming space where students can socialise, study, and relax, fostering a sense of community within the residence. The design scheme has received positive feedback from both students and university staff, highlighting its success in meeting the project objectives.
