Overcoming Initial Obstacles

From the outset, Virtus encountered a myriad of challenges that tested their expertise and resourcefulness. The installation of the fire escape staircase presented a unique challenge due to restricted access and limited space for manoeuvring components. Moreover, the project required meticulous planning to ensure compatibility with existing structures and utilities, such as mains cabling from a nearby substation.

Collaborating with MNP Structural Engineers, Darling Associates, and Hoare Lea, Virtus meticulously designed the steel structure of the staircase.

Adding Expanded Mesh Panels

Employing innovative cantilever techniques, the structure seamlessly integrated with the existing building while maintaining structural integrity. Carefully positioned sixteen-metre piles provided additional support, ensuring the safety and stability of the staircase. Once the new structure was in place, it was finished in our Zircon 122L expanded mesh panelling system.

The use of our expanded mesh panelling provided a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish to the staircase, enhancing both functionality and visual appeal.

Beyond the fire escape staircase, Virtus undertook a comprehensive external works package, including the removal of existing cladding panels and insulation. Working in collaboration with Urban Change Group, Virtus designed and implemented a non-combustible insulation and fireproofing scheme, bolstering the building’s safety measures.

The revitalised reception area, adorned with bespoke joinery and unique design elements, serves as a striking focal point, reflecting the building’s renewed identity. The meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship showcased throughout the project underscores Virtus’ dedication to quality and innovation.

The works were successfully delivered with the building being occupied throughout the project. Through collaboration, ingenuity, and sheer determination, all teams involved overcame formidable challenges to deliver a project of exceptional calibre.
